Dungy, Tony, with Nathan Whitaker. Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, & Priorities of A Winning Life. Kansas City: Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 2007. Lots of people respect Tony Dungy. He is a man of principle and faith. The loss of his son Jamie by suicide, and his walk with God to heal from that despair is what really binds me to his words of wisdom and steadiness of character.

Without sounding the least bit preaching, this is a wonderful read that comes close to articulating the “top of the mountain” experience that athletes often achieve through those Olympic moments.
  Sandrolini, Mike. All the Good in Sports: True Stories That Go Beyond the Headlines. Regal Books, Ventura, 2007. Light reading from a recent publication about the inner and changed lives of athletes and coaches in the news.
  Tolsma, Brant. The Surrendered Christian Athlete. Warwick House: Lynchburg, 2001. This would be a good reference for a bible study group with athletes or coaches.

  Frankl, Viktor E. Man’s Search for Meaning. New York: Washington Square Press, 1984. A classic text. Frankl, was a psychologist and holocaust survivor. His studies centered on what he termed “tragic optimism”. He sought to answer the question: What is it that gives some individuals the courage to survive horrendous circumstances?
  PaulVI, On Evangelization in the Modern World (Evangeli Nuntiandi) (EN), no. 73, as quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), 2nded. (Washington, DC: USCCB-Libreria Editrice Vaticana, 2000).
  Pfitzner, Victor. Paul and the Agon Motif: Traditional Athletic Imagery in the Pauline Literatrure. Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1967. A hard to find & expensive read for theologians and scholars. Many words are in Greek. But this book deals with the history of sports and sports metaphors in the context of human history: spiritual, philosophical, and physical.

 

Strong, Mary. Letters of the Scattered Brotherhood: A Twentieth Century Classic for Those Seeking Serenity And Strength. San Francisco: HarperCollins, 1991. One of those gems you wonder about. Might it have been manna dropped from heaven? I found it at a used bookstore. It has the sweetest way to encourage perseverance.
